Karen And Deon Address The Communication Problems In Their Relationship
Married couple Deon and Karen have fourteen children, and their new show Doubling Down With The Derricos has allowed viewers to take a peek into their lives.
In the first few episodes of the first season of the TLC show, Deon and Karen showed viewers exactly how to go about tasks like chores and bedtime with a whole slew of kids.
Now, however, the pair are giving fans a glimpse of something way more intimate: their marriage and the problems in their relationship.
Is Their Love Enough?
In a conversation with her mother-in-law, Karen revealed that she and Deon are having communication issues. According to Karen, the couple has been growing apart, mostly due to their very different responsibilities in the house.
“It’s like we have two different focuses. I mean, I am inundated with three new babies, one needing extra care. And then he’s got the focus of to and from school, all of the extracurricular activities, running a business, running the properties,” Karen admitted.
When her mother-in-law asked if Karen was being honest with Deon about how she was feeling, the mother of fourteen confessed that she does not always say things in the way that she would like. “I think sometimes it comes out as an attitude,” Karen said.
Deon’s mother did not approve of Karen’s reaction, but she did admit to TLC producers that she believes the size of the family adds a lot of stress to the marriage: “I thought it was rough for me with two children, so I cannot imagine fourteen.”
Letting The Feelings Out
Deon’s mother was quick to explain the importance of communication to her daughter-in-law. “Communication is key,” she told Karen.
Rather than speak to the benefits of communicating, the older of the two women chose to warn Karen of what a lack of communication could do to her marriage. “When you keep your feelings bottled up inside of you, you become two units,” she said.
