At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, Eric Arthur Heiden (born June 14, 1958, in Madison, Wisconsin) was an American long track speed skater and road cyclist who won all five men’s speed skating races and thus an unprecedented five individual gold medals, as well as four Olympic records and one world record. Heiden also set four Olympic records and one world record during his time on the ice. With his performance at the same Games, he went on to become the most successful Winter Olympian ever, and indeed the most successful Winter Olympian ever from a single edition of Winter Olympics. The Athlete’s Oath, which he also gave, was also performed at the same games. Heiden is considered as a legendary figure in the speed skating world, particularly in Europe, where the sport is very popular.
His accomplishments are noteworthy since just a handful of speed skaters (and sportsmen in general) have won contests in both sprint and long-distance events in the same year. Until now, Heiden has been the only athlete in the history of speed skating to win gold medals in all five events in a single Olympic competition, and he is the only one to have done so in a single season. A number of people believe he is the greatest overall speedskater (short and long distances) in the history of the sport, and he is right. Despite being the only speed skater to make the list, Heiden was rated No. 46 on ESPN’s SportsCentury 50 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century, which was released in 1999. In the same year, a Dutch newspaper dubbed him “the greatest skater of all time.
” His sister, Beth Heiden, is also a competitive cyclist, speedskater, and cross-country skier in addition to his brother. His hometown of Shorewood Hills, Wisconsin (a suburb of Madison), was the inspiration for the establishment of the “Heiden Haus,” a small outpost where local children can warm up after skating or playing hockey on the ice rink. Eric and his sister Beth were the driving forces behind the establishment of this small outpost (complete with underground clay platform). Following his sporting career, Heiden went on to pursue a career in medicine, and as of 2012, he is the team doctor for the BMC Racing Team.
